Background on Chant :
This chant tells the story of the first hula on the Big Island. Hi`iaka is the favored sister of Pele and was the first to learn to dance from her friend Höpoe who lived at Hä`ena in Kea`au on the island of Hawai`i. In the chant, Hä`ena is another name used for Hi`iaka.
